Convergence insufficiency is not detected on a routine eye examination. It can have serious negative effects on a child's or adult's ability to coordinate his or her eyes on up close work, such as reading. Most people with convergence insufficiency are not aware that they have this problem. As a consequence, convergence insufficiency can lead to the perception of double/overlapping images as well as to the loss of attention or concentration after a short time, and the latter can often be associated or misdiagnosed as attention deficit ADHD.

Convergence insufficiency does not disappear with age.

There are about 10 million families in the United States who face convergence insufficiency.

In Romania, the number of people who are affected by this vision problem is not known.

Researchers determined that a point of convergence located at a distance of more than 7.5 cm is classified as Convergence Insufficiency.

A child with convergence insufficiency, most often, struggles to perform his/her visual tasks performed up close. Making this extra effort translates into emotional reactions and consequences, often leading to stress, frustration, internalization, and doubt about one's intellectual abilities.

Here is a video where you can find out about the convergence insufficiency and the simple test that can be diagnosed.

Symptoms that occur in convergence insufficiency

  • Concentrating difficulty
  • Reading difficulty
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Sleepiness
  • Irritated eyes
  • Blurry vision
  • Overlapping words, double view

Many children with convergence insufficiency have low self-esteem and negative feelings about themselves.

Here is what a child with insufficient convergence often thinks: “I think I'm stupid. Headaches are probably part of my life. My parents think I'm lazy. Friends think I'm a fool…”

Convergence insufficiency is treated by visual therapy which obviously improves

  • the child's performance in reading and implicitly the school performance
  • behaviour towards others
  • self-opinion and self-esteem.
